Verona

We had a great day in Verona today. We walked what I believe to be everything. Further from the city centre and all the way around the outskirts again. Another beautiful day today.

Wow, we saw so much today. Verona is a great city. Apparently it is the city of love. In someways this makes sense due to the fact that it is largely based off of the play by William Shakespeare Romeo & Juliet, even though that is a tragedy. A lot of what Verona is known for is based on Juliets balcony.

We started off today, by walking back into the piazza that surrounds their arena. We really had a beautiful day. Today there were Roman guards dressed up and standing around pieces of their stage.

We conquered a lot today, enjoying every minute of it as we meandered through this beautiful city. It is a deceivingly large city, especially when you look back at the city pictures above the city you really get a view how large everything is. But even just walking around you get a real sense of it all. We walked around both the medieval and Renaissance walls that they have, which run parallel to each other  just a block or two apart.

We saw so much it is hard to put it all into words. But Verona is beautiful, the city, the weather, the atmosphere.

We also made our way through other piazzas and to the castelvecchio which is the castle bridge, that over looks the river that circles around the city.

Juliets balcony was next on our list. Apparently the thing to do is to hold Juliets boob and get a picture with her. I wasn't really into that thing but I did want a picture of her, as well as the balcony. One thing that was cool is that apparently they do a travelling show of Romeo and Juliet starting at the balcony. Due to the fact it said starting I took that to mean it starts there and then moves around to a specific place. I am not sure if that is the case or not, but neat if it is. The balcony was definitely as anti-climatic as I originally thought it would be. But neat to see anyways.

Along the way today we walked across a number of different flowers. Some that looked tie dyed and others that just looked pretty. We also stopped for a caffeine fix along the way at the house of coffee or Casa di caffe. Luke had a blended coffee, and I had a riconemello, which was fantastic. Chocolate syrup with espresso on top and then milk on top of that. It was SOO yummy!! Also something that I would definitely have again.

We dipped into an electronic store, because it was air conditioned, something we haven't been in for a while, and because I wanted to take a peak. Apparently Samsung in Verona loves Calgary, featured the city of Calgary downtown, the saddle dome, a few different views of our mountains, and a picture of the parliament buildings. But only one of parliament, most of it was of Calgary, and our beautiful Rockies. PROUD to be CALGARIAN!!

For dinner tonight we found a place that had a cute little courtyard, in behind a restaurant. A little eyrie feeling as we were the only ones sitting back there, but we enjoyed a great evening chatting, eating, and being with each other in beautiful Verona. Unfortunately, and this is the first time this has happened, they had gluten free options for me, but all of the 2 things Luke originally wanted were not available, leaving him with option number 3. Not once have we been anywhere where that has happened, so that was new.

Good and bad, generally the places in Europe that are gluten free have been the Italian places. This was nice because not everywhere else has pasta or pizza. But now being in the country it will be a battle to find other things to eat, which is good and bad. We certainly aren't in the business of getting fat, but eat every meal with starchy bread things, might make that a little more challenging.

We walked through the city a little more after dinner before returning back to home. Where we cleaned Luke up. Gave him a haircut and trimmed his beard so that he doesn't die of heat. I love his beard, but he has made it clear when we get home it's coming off, which makes me sad, but will be interesting to see if he has a gnarley tan difference. I might get my way for a little longer if that is the case, just to mask the difference.

We truly enjoyed the sweet city love of Verona, and would definitely come back. The memories we make throughout the day are often hard to put into words. There are so many memories that we have that we will truly cherish, that I hope I will always remember, even though I couldn't possibly write them all down. I am so glad that we have the time that we have left to together. Loving Italia and looking forward to the days ahead. Here we come Venezia!

And so the adventure continues...

  1. Did you write a letter to Juliet? Is that a real thing? Letters to Juliet?
