Northern Holland

Today we started our day as we have the rest of the week, by a delicious breakfast and a cup of coffee. Here in Groningen the weather was cool and grey, but the further we got away the warmer it got. But Also got colder due to the fact that we were getting closer to the ocean and the air became cool. We headed north and stopped along the way in Rhodeschool where Lens great grandparents lived. Cute houses along the single street running through the town.

On our travels we found the dijk that in the event of water rising or a flood keeps the ocean away from the cities and towns. Most of the Netherlands is slightly above sea level, at sea level, or below sea level. Which in and of itself is crazy. We even eventually came across some sunshine and blue sky that we ended up bringing back with us to Groningen.

We walked around and saw some sheep, and the new windmills that seem to be all over Europe. We continued on and drove through the countryside seeing many small towns along the way. For lunch we stopped at a fish restaurant on the ocean and had an awesome fish lunch.

We even saw a windmill with only two propellers. Poor guy wasn't good enough to earn his third. But he looks silly compared the rows and rows of bigger three propellor windmills.

After lunch we continued walk and found some a little path through the trees to walk through, leading to a row of swans and a different vantage point on the cove.

This beach that we found was paved, which is kind of silly but I am sure there is a reason for it. On the way back to Groningen we came across a little fishing town. By the looks of it, they didn't mean for it to become an attraction, but it certainly is. There were many people stopping to see the many ships that they had. They just seemed to go about just their business while people like us stumble in to take a look.

At this place we came across a number of fish being hung to dry outside. Never seen that before. But was pretty cool. Today was definitely a fishing day, due to the fact that many of the things that we saw and ate were related to fish. Was was cool, it was like having an unproclaimed theme to the day.

They also had tons and tons of shells. That seem to be very common, that they are used almost where sand would be used. They also had a mound of shells like you would see a pile of dirt or sand that was waiting to be moved, it was pretty crazy.

We made it back and set out to explore a little bit of what the city of Groningen has to offer. It is safe to say that we saw everything that there is to see. Including that we stumbled upon a pirates boat on the canal that has been made into a pancakes house restaurant. Here they eat pancakes not just for breakfast, and they also add other things to them like we experienced in Nice, and they create a whole new meal. This was a super unique place to eat at and a cool experience. Glad the had a gluten free meal for me as well.

To top it off they had great little signs tell you which washroom you were meant to go into. We didn't even go looking for this place we just happened upon which was great! Especially because we were on a theme of fishing for today and we got to eat in one of the boats that we saw all over.

We made our way back home and stopped along the way to pick up some food for breakfast a liquid snack for the evening to share. This is me non chalontly walking down the street after proclaiming that I was meant to be European. Have the right dog, right car (mini), and right house (garage is iffy). When we got back home we relaxed for a little bit, before starting to play a game. Monopoly deal, played with cards.. It is great fun, but also intense at times, just as monopoly is.

Another great day for the books. Enjoying Holland and seeing the rather flat yet windy countryside that the north has to offer.

And so the adventure continues...
