Kinderdijk

Another grandiose breakfast to start our day off right, and cups of coffee to go around. This was great as today we also had a lunch for on the road due to the mass amounts of buns that was served with breakfast. They have these cute little salt and pepper shakers! Which is of course a novelty to me at least.

The streets are lined with house that jump up in numbers very quickly as you walk past realizing how many houses are actually along it is pretty crazy. The also have large trees here, some streets you see huge trees but the parks for sure have a large trees.

From the B&B we made our way to the car and headed around The Hague and found the houses where both of Karins parents grew up. Pretty cool to see where they lived, and to hear some stories of what she knew. While we were around where Oma lived, we saw a pond with lillypads and a stork. The stork wasn't carrying any babies so that's a good thing.

This is as far as my camera would zoom, but I have never seen a stork before so this was pretty cool. Just around the corner we found a neat looking church.

The blue sky and sunshine is still going strong which is awesome! Or at least I am not complaint as I love the heat! From here we made our way to Kinderdijk. A cute little town, but the main attraction is that the have 19 or so windmills. Real old windmills they are super neat, we think that some people live in them as they have a garden around and someone that looked like they were very comfortable and tending to the land around it.

We stayed here and ate lunch which was great, sandwiches for the group and peanut butter and rice cakes for me.we found more rice cakes!! It's great and delicious! The sun continued to beat down on us so we decided to keep walking. We walked to the end of the path and the turned around and headed back. When we did we found a Dutch shoe for Luke and I to sit in!

We continued on and ended up in our home for the night in Arnhem. A cute little house that was once the mayors house, Bourgemeester, across the street from a lovely park with a fountain. We arrived and got settled and then headed up the street to the grocery store. We decided on a dinner in this evening. Rotisserie chicken, salad, potato salad, bread (even GF loaf), and cucumber slices, it was delicious. Then we decided we would take a stroll into the city and see what Arnhem was all about. It was a quiet Tuesday evening and the restaurants were the only thing that was open still. But we still mangled our way through. We even found the Manneken pis part two, except this is the girl that had to pee but never could we decided.

Hehehe we are funny. I just love the city streets and the way they look. The houses all lined up. Even though they are in a row lined on either side they still find a way somehow to make them individual. Shutter, doors, flowers, random little things that just seem to set them apart and make them their own individual little places.

Dutch stairs are steep! Our first house had similar stairs but not quite as deadly. These stairs are scary steep and curved, they don't even have a handrail so their is nothing to hold on to. At first the guy took my backpack and I felt bad, then I was very greatful as I certainly would have died on my way down, I'm still surprised I didn't. But another great little place to stay, with a nice living space, free coffee, and enough beds for us all. And if we are fighting we can easily separate the beds so it's like you aren't sleeping next to each other just near. Luckily that isn't the case, but hey just need some space the option is there. Cozy beds with my kind of pillow. Super squishy you just float away and you and the pillow become one.

After our walk we sat out on the back patio and had a beer, cider for myself. I haven't seen Magners in Europe since Ireland, which is its origin, so I was glad to see some normal cider. Not cidre as we learned in Spain to be very different and more of a specialty wine beer cider cross or something. Either way it was enjoyed. Heineken of course as we are in its home territory was enjoyed as well.

We are certainly on vacation time, where the hours fly by and you don't know the days. This is great, also makes me glad I didn't title the blogs based on that it is exciting and relaxing not knowing what day of week it is. On one hand it is sad that the hours fly by but it is aso great because it just doesn't matter, and you know you are having a great time because you aren't watching the hours pass.

Another beautiful day spent with great company travelling a unique country, we are certainly enjoying ourselves.

And so the adventure continues...

  2. Perhaps Luke and Len should pay special attention as to how to build those windmills. We are told that is the industry of the future hear in Alberta once they are finished destroying the oil industry!

Glad you are all together and "Havinga" great time. Yes Lindsay, we are still getting used to you being a Havinga too! L2B4U
