Day 30 - Nice at Night

Wow, it's crazy to think that we have been away from home for 30 days now. Something that neither of us have done before and only dreamed of doing. As we were sitting drinking a beer on the patio overlooking the beach, we were both struck with thoughts of how great this is. Just don't have to worry what the day holds or where you end up, and that sitting in the sun for a few hours in the middle of your day doing nothing, isn't a bad thing. It is just what the day ends up becoming and there is nothing wrong with that.

We enjoyed the beach and the sun very much today. Although their whole beach is made up of rocks we sat on a bench and then on a patio and that was just fine with us. We made a day of it. We continued the walking journey today, as we do every day, but this time we talked away from old town all along the whole coast of the beach of Nice. Was great to walk and see it all, but it really doesn't change. The biggest difference is the old town is on one side and the airport is on the other.

Speaking of airports, they have a constant flow of large planes fly and landing at their airport. We know this very well because they don't seem to fly over the city, but instead they follow water around the coast of Nice before landing at the airport. Pretty cool to see so many different kinds of planes as well as the number of planes that land there.

We have learned that Nice gets 300 days of sunshine. Which is hard to believe in some ways and totally believable in others as they certainly seem to all be nice and tanned, or in the process of becoming more tanned.

The biggest highlight of our day really was just walking by the ocean and sitting and enjoying both it and good conversation with each other. As well as no conversation and enjoying the moment of the fact that this is life for next few months, what that means, looks like, and how insane it is to think that. We also realized that we won't see the coast again like this till we reach Italy in July, which is also weird to think as we have seen quite a bit of coast between northern Spain and the western coast of Spain and now the French Riviera.

We have enjoyed Nice and would come back, but it does seem to be a place that is more of a home base for people that they enjoy being in but also enjoy going to the places that are near by. I guess food for thought for the next time we make it back here.

We have certainly enjoyed the French charcuteries and look forward to a few more days of it before moving countries. We have also realized that the French appreciate it when you at least try to say a few French words beyond hello. Luke did say though that they take languages very seriously and want it to be perfect before they come to speak it but if you butcher their language enough they will get frustrated and speak the little they know. Hopefully we haven't been that bad, but we tend to get people so far that are some what knowledgable in English which is nice.

We did find ourselves some escargot this evening which was delightful. I love escargot and apparently France is the place to get it. Was prepared slightly different with a type of pesto, but was still delicious. Also was cooked and then put back into its shell, which I have not had them prepared this way before. Was definitely an experience figuring out how to use the tongs they give you to hold them and getting it out without making a mess or a fool outta yourself. But success was ours and we both managed to make it through.

Nice comes alive at night. People come out of nowhere and seem to be everywhere. Gelato also seems to be a popular evening choice which seems a little odd because the scorching sun is no longer scorching. But I suppose it's no different then back home going for ice cream just cause you can and want to. The streets are jam packed, full of tables and food and people doing back flips in the streets and little market places and more people and more food and lots and lots of drinks. Almost every street seems to have something happening. The football(soccer) game was also on so everyone was busy getting into that as well.

Look us all cultured lifts, football and many other random words I'm sure will have and will continue to acquire as we go along.

Tomorrow we make our way to Paris. The city of love and lights. Definitely looking forward to few busy days exploring this city.

And so the adventure continues...
